Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh's city council has made its final vote to implement new rules regarding the ownership of wild or dangerous animals. The new ordinance will go into effect 60 days after adoption, and will prohibit keeping a pet from a species considered a "dangerous wild animal" within city limits. The city's definition includes "medically significant snakes," as well as "any non-domesticated animal, which is normally found in the wild state, is inherently dangerous to person or property and does not generally live in about the habitation of humans." Those who wish to be grandfathered in must register their animals with the city before July 1, 2023. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  2. Raleigh hosted several different gatherings on the 4th of July this year. On East Morgan Street, dozens came out to march in support of abortion rights. (abc11) Pyrotechnico put on Raleigh's fireworks show at Dix Park. The display lasted 25 minutes, with 2,000 shells prepared to be lit manually. (abc11, abc11)
  3. Raleigh police are looking for a person who shot a man on Tuesday afternoon at a New Bern Avenue gas station. The reported shooting took place just before 1:30pm to find the man who was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Police are looking for a man driving a Toyota Camry from the early 2000s with a black hood and silver rims, but have not released a specific description of the driver. (WRAL)
  4. As of Monday, Raleigh's Pullen Park increased the price to enjoy attractions. The train, carousel, and kiddie boats now cost $2 per rider. Pedal boat rentals now will cost $7 for 30 minutes. All older tickets that have been purchased will be honored. The park is also limiting hours due to staffing needs, and families should check the amusement hours before visiting the parks. (WRAL)
  5. Wake County is continuing to scale back COVID-19 testing efforts as county leaders scale back access. At the beginning of June the county had 11,600 appointments, but that is down to 2,700. The last day for drive-thru testing in Wake County will be at the end of this month on July 29. (abc11)
  6. Raleigh families are struggling to find affordable housing as it comes time for them to renew their leases. Many are getting priced out, as existing landlords are raising rents, in line with demand for the city. Rent in Raleigh has increased 1.8% from June and 18% from last year according to a report from ApartmentList.com. Many Wake County programs to aid families have waitlists a year long. (abc11)
