Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. It has been a year since the venomous zebra cobra escaped a Raleigh residence, and local lawmakers are finally moving forward on the exotic animal ban. City Councilmember David Knight has been pushing for the regulation for the past year, after the cobra was loose in his district. The current ordinance that the council has been discussing would require registering exotic pets and being in line with several city requirements. (CBS17, WRAL)
  2. The Wake County Public School System is continuing to update its safety policies after an audit last year found room for improvement. The school system has conducted annual security reviews at every school and requires school employees to be trained on the schools emergency plan every year. In a recent survey, 22% of teachers surveyed said they had not even read their school's crisis plan. Students have recommended that the school board invest more into helping kids having a hard time. (abc11, WRAL)
  3. Raleigh leaders are working to preserve historic locations that have impacted the city's LGBTQIA+ community. The Raleigh Historic Development Commission is uncovering stories to consider locations that could be added to the National Register of Historic Places. The city is hoping that residents will participate in an online survey to share memories and identify locations. (WRAL)
  4. The Wake County Animal Center is currently at capacity and asking residents to consider pet adoption. A spokesperson from the shelter said there is no more room for dogs and it may have to resort to euthanasia to make more space. The shelter also asks for anyone who is unable to adopt to help spread the word by posting available pets to their social media. Wake County Animal Center posted on Facebook, "We don't want to euthanize for space and this plea is to make our community aware of the urgent need." (WRAL)
  5. Today, the Red Bull BC One Raleigh Cypher is taking place in Raleigh. The event is a breakdancing competition to precede another battle in Orlando. Breakdancing will be featured in the 2024 Paris Olympics and the sport is growing immensely. The event will be held at 1053 E. Whitaker Mill Road. Doors open at 4 p.m. (Spectrum News 1)
