Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. An extreme heat warning was issued for Monday, continuing into today. The heat index values are expected to range from 110-115 degrees today in central North Carolina. Extreme heat and humidity can increase the potential for heat-related illness, especially among those working or participating in outdoor activities. To prevent heat-related illness, stay hydrated and avoid too much time in the sun if possible. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  2. Raleigh's Dorothea Dix Park will be receiving a $1 million pledge from Bank of America over the next four years. The donation makes Bank of America one of the 22 Founding Partners of the Conservancy. According to a Monday press release, the donated funds will help bring more free community programs and construction of the Gipson Play Plaza. (CBS17)
  3. On Monday morning, Capital Boulevard northbound lanes were closed following a pedestrian crash. The rash was reported before 2:30 a.m. near the Calvary Drive intersection. The road reopened at 4 a.m. One person was transported to WakeMed with serious injuries. The driver did remain at the scene and it is unclear if they will be charged in the incident. (WRAL)
  4. A Raleigh-based pest control company is offering homeowners $2,000 if they allow the company to release approximately 100 American cockroaches into their home. The Pest Informer is looking to test out a specific pest control technique to gauge effectiveness and are looking for seven homeowners to participate. The study would last about 30 days and homeowners are not allowed to use any additional treatments during the study. If at the end of the study, the infestation has not been eliminated, the company will use other treatment options. (CBS17, WRAL)
  5. The Cary Police Department is investigating a shooting at the Motel 6 on Buck Jones Road. The shooting took place on Sunday and left one person injured. Police have not said if anyone is in custody related to the event. A nearby business owner says that in the 26 years he has been in the area, he has seen dozens of shootings. With that and other crime activity in the area, he says that he and other business owners are being impacted by it. (WRAL)
