Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Just days after Deputy Ned Byrd was killed in the line of duty, someone stole a truck and camping trailer from his home. The Wake County Sheriff's Office said that Byrd's 2019 Toyota Tacoma and 2020 Flyer camping trailer were both stolen sometime Saturday night into Sunday morning. The North Carolina Sheriffs' Association announced on Monday that they will be offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the murder. The Wake County Sheriff's Office also released a photo of a pickup truck they believe was driven by the suspect. (abc13)
  2. Raleigh's Sip N' Stroll district is open for business, but not all business owners are participating in the new concept. Nearly 70 bars and restaurants are opted-in on the program, but some are waiting to see the rollout first. Will Gibbs, co-owner of Zenith said that he has concerns about safety and enforcement as the Raleigh Police Department is struggling with staffing. Since the concept is new, business owners have questions surrounding liability and logistics with big events within the social district. (abc11)
  3. As the Raleigh Police Department struggles to fill the current 122 sworn officer vacancies, volunteers are stepping up to help serve the city. There are new SUVs driving around town with "RPD Volunteer" on the sides. The volunteers are not sworn officers, but are patrolling the city and helping handle various calls. The volunteers went through special academy classes and training to help officers patrol. (CBS17)
  4. The North Carolina Traffic Safety Expo has returned to the Raleigh Convention Center for the first time in years. State leaders held the expo to educate and promote safe driving, especially as the number of fatal crashes has been rising. More than 650 law enforcement agencies, engineers, planners, and more took part in the expo to learn ways to prevent accidents and fatal crashes. According to NCDOT, there were more than 1,700 fatal crashes last year in the state alone, the highest percentage since 1975. (CBS17)
  5. A driver ran his car through a restaurant's outdoor deck on Monday afternoon. The incident happened just after 4:50 p.m. on the corner of Duraleigh and Edwards Mill roads. A 70-year-old man was driving a Toyota, and smashed through the deck of Rudino's Sports Corner. Police say that the driver accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, and no one was injured in the wreck. (CBS17, WRAL)
  6. The WakeMed Mothers' Milk Bank is in need of more donors as infant patients in neonatal intensive care units are in need of breast milk donations. According to Kerrie Gottschall, manager of the WakeMed Mothers' Milk Bank, the amount of donations are around half of what is needed for supply to reach capacity. Prospective donors can fill out a form on the WakeMed Mothers' Milk Bank's website, and free, overnight shipping is provided for donors living outside the area. (abc11)
