Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- For the first time since the death of Ruel Rodriguez-Nunez, his family is speaking publicly about who the man was. His brother, Jasiel Rodriguez-Nunez, said that he does not believe that his brother went to the police precinct to kill anyone, and was "just shot like an animal." Rodriguez-Nunez also maintained that his brother did not struggle with mental illness, but was likely protesting some of what he experienced while in jail. Chief Estella Patterson is still petitioning a Wake County judge to release footage of the incident. (abc11)
- On Saturday, hundreds of people gathered in downtown Raleigh to protest possible anti-abortion legislation. In a poll conducted of North Carolinians earlier this month, 17% believe abortion should be entirely outlawed, 22% feel the state should pass more restrictions, 19% feel the state should lower restrictions, and 26% believed the laws should be left as they are. The protest took place on the last day of early voting for the North Carolina May 17 primaries, as the possibility of Roe V. Wade's overturn drives many to the polls. (WRAL)
- On Friday night a woman was victim to a hit-and-run at the intersection of Peyton Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The woman has not been identified, but was able to give identifiers for the suspect. The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment. (CBS17)
- The push to legalize sports betting in North Carolina could see a large step forward as state lawmakers return to Raleigh later this month. The bill has already cleared the Senate and Rep. Jason Saine (R-Lincoln) said that a majority in the State House have committed to voting in favor of the bill. The General Assembly comes back into session on Wednesday, May 18, and Saine said that they want to get the bill passed "sooner rather than later." (CBS17)
- A Raleigh homeowner is facing off with their Home Owners Association, after they told him he must take down a dog treat station that he has maintained outside of his home for the past five years. The issue may be settled with a Wake County District Court lawsuit. Chuck Pringle set up his pet snack station in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the street, in an area he maintains is exempt from HOA control. Both parties are awaiting a decision on who has authority over the land. (WRAL)
