Happy National Thrift Shop Day,

Today's weather, 8/17: Possible light rain in the evening and overnight. High: 85 Low: 76.
Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- There is a concern that a possible Coronavirus outbreak has happened at the North Carolina General Assembly. Two cases have been confirmed as well as one negative test result. Representative Keith Kidwell was hospitalized shortly after his wife had to be hospitalized with COVID-19. Kidwell has been released and it is expected that his wife will be released soon. The other confirmed case involved an unidentified vaccinated member of Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger's staff. Berger's spokesman Pat Ryan says that most, if not all, of his staff are vaccinated. Some lawmakers and lobbyists have expressed concern for going to the Legislative Building. (WRAL)
- A drunk driver, traveling the wrong way on Interstate 40 early Sunday, crashed into a church van. The crash happened around 12:15 am going eastbound near Aviation Parkway. A Durham man was driving a Honda Civic and state troopers said he was "very, very drunk." The church van was traveling in the far left lane and was able to swerve at the last second to avoid a head on collision. The two men in the church van were returning from a church function after dropping off members of the church. Derrick Clyburn, the driver of the Civic, has been charged with reckless driving, driving the wrong direction on a controlled access highway, and DWI. (WAVY)
- The Hopscotch Music Festival is planning its return after being canceled in 2020. The festival will be held September 9th-11th completely outdoors as opposed to being spread through various indoor venues. The event will be kicked off that Thursday at 3:45 pm at the Moore Square stage. Single day festival passes are on sale now, and Hopscotch will also be partnering with Pop-Up Raleigh to host an art market at Moore Square and Martin Street. (WRAL)
- North Carolina officials said that nearly 85,000 state employees had their information mistakenly uploaded to an internal portal. The Department of Information Technology and Office of State Human Resources announced last week that a file containing their names, social security numbers, and employment information was uploaded. Upon discovering the file on July 30, it was immediately removed. There has been no evidence to suggest that the file was improperly accessed but officials cannot rule out that possibility. They are now offering 2 years of identity theft resources to affected individuals. (Spectrum News 1)
- After gaining an undesirable reputation as the "state where adults go to marry children," North Carolina is close to passing a bill that would put an end to the practice. Although the bill would not put NC on pace with the national push to raise the minimum age for marriage to 18, it would increase it from 14 to 16. The bill would also require any 16-year-old to be within 4 years of age with their spouse. North Carolina has seen an influx of marriage tourism as surrounding states have increased their minimum marriage age. (NPR)

O.K., friends. With the city abuzz as students return to campus and event schedules are released, remember to be safe and have fun! There's so much going on and it's easy to feel overwhelmed, but take it day by day and enjoy the ride.
