Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Wake County is temporarily adding four FEMA ambulances due to call volume and COVID-19 related staffing issues. The County utilized FEMA ambulances due to pressures in October, and this round will serve the county through February 3. (CBS17)
  2. Wake County has reported COVID-19 outbreaks at 18 nursing homes in the span of two days. The county is not releasing information regarding affected residents or employees, but many of the facilities have had previous outbreaks. (CBS17)
  3. A power pole was brought down by a pickup truck in downtown Raleigh early on Thursday morning. The pole on West Morgan Street was snapped at the base and crews were working to repair it for hours. Power outages were reported in the area. (WRAL)
  4. The SPCA of Wake County is signing on to honor Betty White via a viral challenge to honor her on her 100th birthday. The #BettyWhiteChallenge calls people to donate any amount of money to their favorite animal shelter as a final birthday gift to Betty White. The SPCA of Wake County has set a goal to raise enough money to save 100 senior pets in her name. (WRAL)
  5. Both sides have made their case in the litigation challenging North Carolina's new congressional and legislative maps, and now closing arguments are set to take place with a decision expected next week. Regardless of the outcome, appeals are likely to follow. Witnesses in the case included mathematicians, political scientists, and leaders in the House's and Senate's redistricting committees.
