Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:

  1. A Wake County student is recovering after being hit by a car on the way to school on Monday. The child was not using the designated crosswalk for families on the way to Wildwood Forest Elementary School. Councilors were made available for any students or staff that may have seen or heard about the accident. On Tuesday there were extra precautions in place to prevent similar incidents. No charges are pending, and the student was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. (abc11)
  2. Just after 11 p.m. on Monday, a Raleigh business was destroyed in a fire. The Pool Specialists warehouse building was closed when the fire started, and firefighters said that 50% of the building was destroyed with smoke damage through the rest of the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation and roughly 40 firefighters were present to extinguish the blaze. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. The City of Raleigh is working to rebrand a former maintenance yard and vehicle fleet facility into a new urban park. The project's current name, Devereux Meadow Park has been linked back to John Devereux Jr., a known plantation and slave owner. Although the city maintains the name refers to a former minor league baseball stadium that was on the site in the 1940s through the 1970s, the Parks, Recreation, and Greenway Advisory Board recommend the project be renamed. Residents now have the option to weigh in on the future name here. (CBS17)
  4. Wakefield Elementary, Middle, and High Schools were on a brief lockdown on Monday, following a shooting in the area. Raleigh police responded to the Residences at Wakefield Apartments at 2:42 p.m. to reports of a shooting. Police said that one minor was shot in the leg, but is expected to be ok. The code red alert lasted ten minutes, and the district didn't send out immediate alerts due to the short length of the lockdown. (CBS17)
  5. A Cary man has been arrested and charged in connection to the death of a 51-year-old man in Chapel Hill. Allen David Wendel was charged with felony death by distribution after the death of a man who had fentanyl, heroin and cocaine in his system when he died. This is the second death by distribution arrest made by the sheriff's office this week. The death by distribution charge was added to state law in 2019. The Chatham County Sheriff's office said that they have spent more than a year investigating these two deaths and anticipate more drug dealers to face charges in upcoming months. (WRAL)
  6. News follow ups:
    1. Launice Battle, the mother accused of killing her two young daughters, appeared in court on Monday. Officials have released details, saying that the two girls died after being left in a car. (abc11, WRAL)
    2. The trailer full of pottery and art supplies that were taken from Robin Rodgers has been returned. Rodgers was visiting Cary for the Lazy Daze Arts Festival and discovered the trailer had been stolen the day before the festival. (WRAL)
    3. More than 90 pets were able to find their forever homes during Wake County's Clear the Shelter adoption event. Since the event, more pets have already arrived to fill some of the space made. (CBS17)
