Happy National Bow Tie Day,
Today there was a lot to take in. I did my best to condense all of the news surrounding education and Afghanistan into comprehensive sections that won't overwhelm you, but give you the opportunity to dive as deep as you like. There's all that, other news, events, and more below.
Today's weather, 8/28: Humid throughout the day. High: 94 Low: 74.
Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- If you notice flags at half-staff this weekend, it is in honor of the lives lost at the attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. Governor Cooper made the order after 13 US service members and more than 100 civilians were killed in a suicide bombing. (WAVY) North Carolina is still anticipating hundreds of emergency evacuees to arrive in the Triangle on Special Immigrant Visas over the next few weeks. (CBS17) One teenage refugee spoke to CBS and says he hopes that teens coming from Afghanistan are able to take advantage of the US education system. (CBS17)
- A 37-year-old man was killed in a northeast Raleigh apartment complex on Thursday morning. Around 7:15 am officers were called to the Perry Point Apartments off of Capital Boulevard, where they found Edward Cooper Outlaw suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital and died from his injuries. The Raleigh Police Department asks anyone with information contact them at Raleigh CrimeStoppers. - KISS was scheduled to perform as part of its last tour ever at the Coastal Credit Union Music Park on Saturday, but are now being forced to reschedule. The news comes after one of the members, Paul Stanley, tested positive for COVID-19. The band said via social media that everyone involved in the tour is fully vaccinated, however after experiencing flu-like symptoms, Stanley got tested and discovered he had a breakthrough infection. Stanley is doing O.K. and the band intends to honor all tickets at a later date that is to be announced. (WRAL)
- Now that the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled to allow evictions to proceed amidst the pandemic, the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resiliency is reminding individuals that they can still apply for assistance. The NC Housing Opportunities and Prevention of Evictions (HOPE) Program can help with rent and utility bill assistance for low income renters across the state. The HOPE program has already distributed $342 million to more than 96,000 households since opening last fall. The application is online at HOPE.NC.gov or you can call (888)927-5467 weekdays from 8:00 am-5:00 pm. (WITN)
- With four times more children infected with COVID-19 compared to last year, Wake County School System is considering new safety measures. (abc11, CBS17) As students are returning to classrooms hoping for a normal education experience, many are feeling increasingly emotional and frustrated with the changes. (abc11) To add onto the frustrations, Wake County is about 100 bus drivers short this school year. Bus drivers are asking for patience and understanding with transportation delays.
