Here are the top four stories in Raleigh today:
- Former mayoral and city council candidate Zainab Khalid Baloch is facing an assault charge. Baloch is accused of stalking a man, following him to a Raleigh police station and using her car as a deadly weapon to ram into his vehicle. She was arrested on Sunday at the Six Forks Road precinct. Baloch has no criminal history and according to police, she was not in a relationship with the victim. (WRAL)
- A code-red lockdown was in place at Wakefield high, middle and elementary schools on Tuesday. Around 11:30 a.m., police received a call about a suspect with a gun at Wakefield High School. All schools were locked down due to their close proximity. The code-red lockdown was lifted around 12:40 p.m., as a search of the school determined the threat was not credible. (CBS17)
- Students at North Carolina State University gathered on Monday night to honor the lives of five students who died this semester. Students broke from studying for finals to hold a grieving period. The students remembered the four students who died by suicide, as well as a fifth student whose death was accidental. Councilors were on site during the event. Student Body president McKenzy Heavlin said that students are looking for faculty to be more flexible with course assignments, deadlines, and absence policies. (WRAL) On Tuesday the University announced that they have partnered with a teletherapy provider for students to access free sessions with licensed counselors online. (NCSU)
- A group of children organized a bake sale and raised more than $60,000 for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). During the fundraiser, the students had raised around $2,000 when a generous donor wrote a check that brought their total to $60,010. According to CureSMA, SMA is the leading genetic cause of death for infants. The Sunday fundraiser was organized by students from Dillard Drive Middle School, and the same group of students has planned another bake sale for Saturday in Cary's Dutchman Downs neighborhood.
