Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. A WakeMed trauma surgeon is shedding new light on gun violence, calling it a public health problem. The level one trauma center at WakeMed is one of the busiest in the state, with 4,800 patients in its trauma registry annually. Executive director of the trauma center, Dr. Osi Udekwu is also a combat veteran and says it's hard for him to digest when civilian injuries start to emulate what he saw on the battlefield. He believes that we need better mental health resources, hospital based intervention programs and stricter gun storage laws. (WRAL)
  2. Epic Games announced that Raleigh will host the 2022 Fortnight Champion Series Invitationals this year. This will be the first in-person competitive Fortnight event since 2019 and will offer a $1 million prize pool. The video game company is based in Cary and is inviting top Fortnight two-player teams from around the world to compete. The last Fortnite event was the 2019 World Cup Finals that drew 19,000 fans to the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York across three days. (HeraldSun)
  3. A Raleigh-based real estate agency is working to create a platform for real-time bidding on homes listed online. Carolina Dash is working with a tech platform to create Doorsey, a site that would give individuals with pre-approval letters or proof of funds to partake in bidding for home purchases. CEO and co-founder Jordan Allen says he wanted to remove the guesswork for buyers frustrated with the traditional homebuying process. (WRAL)
  4. Raleigh businesses are stepping up to provide aid to those in need. Raleigh Rolls and Big League Waffles are both raising money to help families from Uvalde, Texas. In spite of supply chain issues and labor shortages, Ramy Bahgat says that it's nothing compared to what the families are going through. Funds will go to a VictimsFirst online fundraiser. (abc11) Raleigh's Vidrio is hosting a family-style Ukrainian dinner on June 23 to feed people who have been displaced by the Russian war on Ukraine. The dinner will be $150 per person and Vidrio will donate all proceeds from the event to World Central Kitchen. (CBS17)
  5. Numbers are in for J. Cole's Dreamville Festival that took place April 2 and 3 at Dix Park. The festival generated more than $6.7 million in direct economic impact according to a "conservative estimate" by VisitRaleigh. The two-day music festival had 80,000 people in attendance with tickets sold across all 50 states and in 20 countries. (WRAL)
