Here are the top four stories today in Raleigh:

  1. All of the candidates for Wake County Sheriff were set to share their platforms in a forum on Monday night. The sheriff's seat has 10 people running for the first time, including current sheriff Gerald Baker, and former sheriff Donnie Harrison. The panel was hosted at First Congregational Church on Creech Road and members of the community were able to ask questions. Early voting begins in three days. (abc11)
  2. Part of Glenwood Avenue was closed for more than an hour on Sunday evening as around 30 firefighters were at the scene of a home fire. The fire was reported just before 5:25pm and was extinguished about 15 minutes after crews arrived. Inbound lanes of Glenwood Avenue were closed as fire trucks remained in the area. (CBS17)
  3. A former Raleigh police worker has been jailed after robbing a North Carolina Family Dollar at gunpoint. He entered the store just after 1:00pm, and pulled a handgun to demand cash. He soon returned to the store and placed the cash on the counter, saying, "I can't do this." Richard William Dunn was caught while getting into his car to leave the location. (WBTW)
  4. A statewide crackdown took place on Friday night, and more than 250 people were charged by Alcohol Law Enforcement. Suspects are facing charges related to alcohol, drug, firearm, driving and gambling offenses. ALE agents also busted an illegal distillery and 14 ABC permitted businesses were found violating state laws and regulations. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)

From my notebook:

  • It's Get Organized Day and Raleigh is home to The Container Store. I have to be honest, when I first heard people talk about this place I thought they were just trying to jazz up Walmart, but it's a real place and can really help you get organized.
  • Teachers can receive free access to NCMA exhibits at 4:00pm, 5:00pm, and 6:00pm. Reserve your tickets here.
  • Beginning today at 7:00am, Fairview Street will have lane closures from Reid Street to Jarvis Street for a planned water improvement project. (Raleigh Water)
