Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Sound Rivers is a group that monitors river quality in North Carolina, and found four sites unsafe for swimming ahead of Memorial Day. The group monitors over 50 areas from Raleigh-Durham to the Pamlico Sound. This week Buffaloe Road canoe launch, Smithfield Town Commons, and the Riverwalk and Neuse Golf Club in Clayton tested positive for fecal bacteria. The amount exceeded recommended state and federal standards for recreation, and boaters, swimmers, and pets should avoid the areas or use caution and limit exposure. (CBS17)
  2. A Wake County classroom faced questions after North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore posted flash cards on his website on Friday. The flashcards featured LGBTQ+ images, and were being used to teach colors of the rainbow in a preschool classroom. A spokesperson from Wake County released a statement, claiming the flash cards were used without approval and have been removed from the school. (WRAL)
  3. Friday storms left thousands without power, and brought down trees and power lines. A Raleigh family had a large tree fall on their back porch, damaging their roof, and a Garner family has had to move out after a large oak crashed into their home. No tornadoes were officially confirmed, but several areas faced severe flooding. (WRAL)
  4. A group of Democratic senators in Raleigh have proposed a cash rebate for fuel spending. Senate Bill 897 was filed on Thursday, and proposed that every licensed adult driver in North Carolina would get $200 from the state to help combat rising gas prices. The measure is being called the Gas Tax Rebate Act of 2022, and would be funded by some of the surplus tax revenue the state has collected. (WNCT9)
  5. On Friday, the City of Raleigh experienced a system error that impacted online payments. The error caused online payments to not show up as having been paid, and officials asked people who were making payments to wait until the issue was resolved. Around 3:40 p.m. officials said in a news release that the issue was resolved. (CBS17)
