Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin says that she believes the Fourth of July fireworks display at Dix Park will bring a different feel to the celebration. Unlike previous locations downtown and at the Fairgrounds, Dix Park offers a more wide-open green space. She says that people will be able to bring picnic baskets and stretch out as a family. The location will also make it possible for people throughout the city to view the fireworks from the centrally located park. (abc11)
  2. The original Char-Grill location is set to be torn down and rebuilt as part of a mixed-use, 20-story building. The Char-Grill on Hillsborough Street will still serve customers until construction begins. The release of plans did not express when construction would begin. Commercial real estate developer Wilson Blount Development is planning on building a "smart, efficient, and high-quality space with a focus on delivering value for the community. (WRAL)
  3. Beginning on July 8, Raleigh Water will conduct a closure on Wade Avenue from Capital to Scales Street. The closure will be due to a planned water improvement project. The closures will run from 7 p.m. on Friday, July 8 through 6 a.m. on Monday, July 11, and from 7 p.m. on Friday, July 15 through 6 a.m. on Monday, July 18. Ramps from Capital Boulevard to Westbound Wade Avenue will be closed to all traffic. (City of Raleigh Facebook, RaleighNC.Gov)
  4. The Raleigh museum summer passport program is giving parents an opportunity to help their kids learn something and be active. The program runs through the end of August, and families can pick up a passport book from the art, history or science museums in downtown Raleigh. If children complete the passport books they can earn a patch from any of the three museums. (CBS17)
  5. As North Carolina approaches elections, the North Carolina Green Party is under a criminal investigation in relation to its attempts to get on the statewide ballot. The NC Green Party did not receive enough votes in the last gubernatorial election, and was required to get 13,865 signatures to be on the ballot. The state board was notified by several county boards of elections that there were irregularities and on Thursday morning found that some signatures are fraudulent. (CBS17)

Are you a Raleigh resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
