Here are the top three stories today in Raleigh:
- Wake County Sheriff's Office was given a check for nearly $7,500 by the non-profit, Operation Fly Our Flag. Wake County K-9 Deputy Sasha and her new handler were present at the ceremony on Friday. The donation came from the memorial ride that was held for Deputy Ned Byrd who was killed in the line of duty. (CBS17)
- New video footage of North Carolina auditor Beth Wood was released this week that showed her getting into her state-owned vehicle on the night of the hit-and-run with another person. It is unclear if the other person was present at the time of the crash. (abc11, CBS17) This week North Carolina officials made the decision to temporarily suspend Wood's vehicle assignment as the investigation continues. (WRAL) According to the North Carolina Department of Administration, thousands of taxpayer dollars had to be spent to repair the vehicle that was involved in the wreck. (CBS17)
- North Carolina lawmakers are already working on proposals for a variety of legislative proposals:
- Representative Ben Moss, R. District 52, filed legislation to study excluding groceries from sales tax. As inflation continues, currently sitting around 6.5%, and things like eggs reaching historic highs, the alleviation of tax on groceries could help. According to the North Carolina Department of Revenue, there is no state tax on groceries, but local sales and use tax on food brought in more than $400 million last year. (abc11)
- In spite of Republican majorities, North Carolina Democrats have introduced legislation that would put abortion protections into state law. Legislation was filed in both chambers on Wednesday that would prohibit the state's ability to impose barriers that might restrict patients' ability to terminate pregnancy before fetal viability, around 24-28 weeks. Republicans already have plans to propose legislation that could prohibit abortions after the first trimester, with some exceptions. (CBS17, WRAL)
- Lawmakers introduced House Bill 9, also known as the Fair Maps Act on Wednesday. The bill would remove the redistricting power from legislators, and instead give control to an independent commission compromised of North Carolinians. Primary supporters of the bill are Democrats, and if passed by the General Assembly, voters would decide the fate of the proposed change to the state constitution in the 2024 election. (WFMY2)
- Members of the General Assembly have also commented that they will likely take up unfinished matters from last year, as Republicans now hold a stronger majority in each chamber. One of the first bills filed on Wednesday was a proposal to allow medical marijuana for a very small list of ailments. There was also a bill filed that would require sheriffs to cooperate with immigration and customs enforcement, a topic that has been passed and vetoed twice in the past four years. (WRAL, WRAL)

From my notebook:
- It's National Croissant Day and although I generally like to point you to somewhere you can go today to celebrate, I'm biased and firmly believe that the best croissants in Raleigh are found at Layered Croissanterie. It is closed on Mondays, but you can order ahead for when it reopens on Wednesday and I promise the wait will be well worth it.
- Following the high demand for self-defense classes held by the Garner Police Department, it has announced it will add additional classes. (WRAL)
- Girl Scout Cookie season is back, and I spent far too long in the dark just hoping I caught the scouts when I went shopping, but you can actually look up where they are going to be here. Figure out where they will be selling and support our local troops!
You're officially in the loop for today. See you all tomorrow morning for another update!
