Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- City officials and the Dix Park Conservancy broke ground on the Gipson Play Plaza on Sunday. The 18.5 acres of land will have playgrounds and gathering spaces for kids of all ages. The project will have one-of-a-kind play spaces, a family-friendly picnic grove, a restored historic house and gardens, and a water play mountain. The Gipson Play Plaza is expected to open in 2024. (WRAL)
- A section of I-44o will be closing nightly for what could be the next five weeks, depending on the weather. The closures are part of the Interstate 440 Improvements Project, and will impact areas between Jones Franklin Road and Western Boulevard. Between 9:00pm and midnight, one lane will be closed, and from midnight until 5 a.m., all lanes in one direction will close, depending on the day. (CBS17, WRAL)
- Wake County held a School Resource Officer Summit on Monday to prepare for the first day of classes. Officers met to discuss safety on campus, with school administrators, SRO's and other law enforcement participating in security sessions. Other districts have been preparing for the school year with forms of safety training. (WRAL)
- Raleigh's downtown social district kicked off yesterday, and now will allow alcohol on sidewalks within the area from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. The goal of the social district is to increase foot traffic downtown, especially as bars and restaurants are still recovering from the pandemic. The district encompasses Fayetteville Street from the State Capitol to Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, and includes Red Hat Amphitheater and City Market, and signs are posted to make patrons aware of the boundaries. (abc11, Spectrum News 1, WRAL)
- The Triangle Beagle Rescue is looking to find permanent homes for more than three dozen beagles that were rescued from a Virginia puppy farm. The facility bred and sold dogs for animal experimentation. The puppies were released from the facility after a federal judge's order. They have all been vaccinated, medicated, and examined by medical professionals. (abc11, CBS17)
