Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh Police Department has been actively discussing ways to prevent violence in the Glenwood South area, while also tackling noise violations in the entertainment district. Earlier this week, Chief Estella Patterson discussed the violence and mentioned installation of metal detectors in the area, and at least one bar is at risk of losing their amplified music permit due to citations. (CBS17, WRAL)
  2. Bike and pedestrian safety advocates are pushing back on plans to turn part of Capital Boulevard in Raleigh into a freeway. Although advocates agree that the current setup is not working well enough, Adam Kaplan doesn't believe it should be made into a freeway. Several groups sent a letter to the city council asking them to stop the plan for the five-mile stretch, concerned that the change would just drive more traffic through the area. (WRAL)
  3. As gas prices in Raleigh have dropped to $3.89, many people have been wondering if they will soon jump back up. According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at Gas Buddy, the worst could be behind us. President Joe Biden ordered the release of one million barrels of oil per day from the nation's reserve, and although that has done little to influence global supply and demand, De Haan says we could see another 15-25 cent decline in the next few weeks. (CBS17)
  4. Two Raleigh families are speaking out after the loss of their loved ones.
    1. Family of Nathaniel Price have been waiting for answers since February 24, when he was found brutally beaten at a bus stop. Weeks later his family had to make the decision to remove him from life support, and are sharing his story hoping someone has answers. The family has placed hundreds of fliers across Raleigh and say they will continue to fight for justice for Nathaniel until someone is convicted. (abc11)
    2. Suzanne Dealfaraz is also speaking out after her daughter, Ashlee Llagostera was killed while walking along Louisburg Road on December 3. Troopers believe that the driver was impaired, and with prom season and summer months approaching, Dealfaraz is trying to spread the word to help prevent another teen's death. (CBS17)
