Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- With St. Patrick's Day bringing rowdy crowds downtown for the nightlife, light is being cast on the increase in crime in the area. In the last three years, the Glenwood South neighborhood has seen an increase in reported crimes, with 299 reported between January 1 and March 9. In July, the city hired its first-ever Nightlife Planner to work with Raleigh police on weekend nights and establish relationships with businesses. (WRAL)
- One man was found shot inside of a vehicle in a Raleigh neighborhood on Tuesday night. Police arrived at the scene on Idlewild Avenue to find William Michael Hill shot multiple times. Hill was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. Witnesses reported seeing three people running from the scene, and police detained one person for questioning. (CBS17)
- Police and firefighters responded to a drowning at Northshore Lake in Raleigh on Tuesday night. A swift water rescue team worked alongside first responders and police on a recovery operation. It was unclear how the man ended up in the water or how long he was there, and police are still working to identify the victim. (CBS17, WRAL)
- NCDOT will be fast tracking an Interstate-440 resurface from Wake Forest Road to Wade Avenue in both directions. The project was originally planned for 2025, but as many drivers have complained about the condition of the pavement, the project will begin much sooner. The project will focus on bridges first, and then the pavement between bridges. The DOT will also be adding drainage inlets near Glenwood Ave. (abc11)
- William Peace University is considering a name change after making the decision to remove the founders statue from campus. The University will conduct 14 listening sessions to identify parts of the university's history that are "not consistent" with current values. The university namesake William Peace owned 51 enslaved people in the city of Raleigh, according to U.S. Census records. (WRAL)
