Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A GoTriangle passenger was assaulted during a Monday evening ride down South Wilmington Street. A man on the bus got into an "altercation" with another passenger while others were aboard the bus, and one man was slashed across his face with "some sort of cutting instrument." Police confirmed the event, but are uncertain as to what caused the confrontation. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of the sustained injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. (CBS17)
  2. Shaw University held another community meeting on Monday night over the plans to lease part of its downtown property to outside developers. The goal is to create the premier urban HBCU campus in the state, but Shaw's leadership wants the community's support for the plan. Monday's meeting was the third regarding the proposal, and attendees were passionate for and against the project. Supporters say Shaw needs to embrace change, but opponents cite gentrification and believe the cost is not worth the sacrifice. (abc11)
  3. Wake County's free COVID-19 test sites will be closing soon, as Friday is the final day tests will be offered. As the newest variant is surging, there is a renewed push for vaccinations, and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services offers a search engine to find other locations offering free testing. Some parents in Wake County have expressed concerns as the program comes to an end, and the effort it could take when school returns to get students back into classrooms. (abc11)
  4. Raleigh's historic Rialto Theatre's future is uncertain as Bill Peebles has begun the search for a person or group to take over the theatre in the future. Peebles has operated the theatre for more than three decades. The theatre was first built in 1942 and is known for screening a wide variety of movies and remains among the last locally-owned movie theatres in the city. It is also one of the only to survive the pandemic after temporary closure, but in Peebles' email he expressed that the theatre may close under new ownership. (CBS17)
  5. The LGBT Center of Raleigh is shifting resources and focusing on monkeypox education as confirmed cases rise in North Carolina. The World Health Organization has declared the monkeypox outbreak a global health emergency and vaccination efforts are underway. The center worries that the LGBTQ community may be stigmatized due to the disease, as it is passed through intimate contact, and spreading through the community. As many write off the disease as a LGBTQ community issue, the risk of spread increases due to lack of precaution. (Spectrum News 1)

Thursday in Raleigh:

From my notebook:

  • It's National Scotch Day, and if you're looking to enjoy a nice scotch, you have to check out The Whiskey Kitchen! My husband and I got the chance to go recently and he was excited to get a crash course in the "right" way to drink with his flight.
  • William Shatner is back in Raleigh to attend this year's Galaxy Con. Saturday's tickets are already sold out so get your Thursday/Friday/Sunday tickets soon! (CBS17)
  • The Farm Adi Festival will be coming to Raleigh on September 24. Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Chris Stapleton, and Sheryl Crow are among those set to perform. (CBS17, WRAL)
  • Wake Tech hosted 30 students in its first "career accelerator day" on Tuesday at its public safety education campus. (CBS17)

That's it for today! See you tomorrow morning for another update.
