Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A small group of parents and educators gathered in downtown Raleigh on Wednesday to advocate for changes to the state's gun legislation. The protest was planned before the Uvalde Texas shooting that killed at least 19 children and 2 adults. The group demanded that lawmakers implement tougher gun laws, including universal background checks, a ban on assault rifles and automatic weapons and a red flag law. (WRAL) In a separate event of activism, some local advocates are urging law enforcement to do something to deter gun violence. (abc11)
  2. An 80-year old woman escaped a home fire after a tree crashed into her home on Wednesday morning. Raleigh firefighters responded to the home on Glenwood Avenue before 5 a.m. The homeowner was not injured. (WRAL) Another tree fall left 2,000 residences without power on Wednesday morning. The tree was downed on North King Charles Road near Milburnie Road. Multiple traffic lights were out in the area and a majority of power was restored just before 6:30 a.m. (abc11)
  3. Two shootings took place in the early morning hours on Wednesday. Around midnight, one person was shot and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. At around 2 a.m., two people were shot in a residential area near Garner Road, south of downtown. They were taken to WakeMed with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The incidents are not believed to be connected. (WRAL)
  4. An older Raleigh woman mixed up her accelerator and brake pedal, landing her in the Cedar Point Apartment pool on Tuesday afternoon. The woman accelerated through a field area before landing in the pool. She was able to exit the vehicle without injury. No people were swimming at the time of the incident and no one needed medical attention. (CBS17)
  5. The General Assembly has reconvened in Raleigh and are discussing some notable bills.
    1. On Tuesday, Republican leaders introduced the "Parents' Bill of Rights" bill, that is being likened to the Florida "Don't Say Gay" proposal. The bill would ban LGBTQ+ topics in K-3 classrooms, require schools to notify parents if their child questions their sexual identity or requests alternate pronouns to be used, and "increase transparency and trust in our public schools." (abc15, CBS17, WNCT9)
    2. On Tuesday a State Senate committee approved a bill that would keep the state's hemp laws from expiring and permanently remove hemp from the state's Controlled Substances Act. (CBS17)
