Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- Raleigh artist, Kyndall Owens, created a portrait for surviving victim of the Hedingham mass shooting, Lynn Gardner. Gardner is still in the hospital with severe injuries, but her family is posting updates via the GoFundMe page. In a recent update they shared that she has had a tube placed in her chest to drain fluid from her lungs, and is fighting off infection, but has remained positive while communicating via iPad. According to the family's update, Lynn lit up when she saw the portrait painted by Owens, and it is hanging in her hospital room. (WRAL) Mary Marshall will be put to rest today after a public celebration of life at Dix Park, to be followed by a private service for family. Marshall is the last victim of the Hedingham mass shooting to be laid to rest. (WRAL) Mental health providers in the area are working to share information regarding available resources in the area for those in need. (abc11)
- Parents have been pulling their children from care at The Goddard School of Raleigh (North) after one of the owners was arrested on a sex offense charge. Parents were notified that Malay Jindal, 58, was under investigation in August, and charges were officially filed on Thursday. Court documents say that he is suspected of engaging in a sexual act with a 5-year-old on July 29. A majority of Goddard Schools are independently owned and operated, and the manager of Goddard Systems sent families a letter on Thursday regarding the charges, stating that, "Malay denies the allegations and will make every effort to refute them." (abc11, WRAL)
- Wake County is participating in the "Booze It & Lose It" campaign ahead of Halloween. The sheriff's office will increase patrols to help keep drunk drivers off the roads during the statewide enforcement campaign. The campaign began on October 24 and runs through October 31. During the week of Halloween in 2021, there were 766 reported crashes in Wake County, three of which were deadly, and seven of which caused serious injuries. (CBS17)
- Earlier this month, a bus of Shaw University students was stopped and searched while riding to an economic conference in Atlanta. Dr. Dillard said the students were going to the Center for Financial Advancement Conference when Spartanburg County deputies in South Carolina stopped the bus for a minor traffic violation, and then used drug-sniffing dogs to search through students belongings. Five U.S. Congress members from North Carolina have now written a letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, asking his office to look into the search. In a statement following the event, Dr. Dillard said the moment was reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s. (abc11)
- A student and her mother are speaking out after a suspension received after fleeing the perceived situation of a gun on campus. Wake County Schools said that a fight prompted a lockdown at East Wake HS. There was a weapon on campus even though it turned out to be a BB gun. Mother Naomi Miller says that she told her daughter to leave and get away, and "why would you want your child to stay in an environment if they're able to get away." Wake County Schools said that lockdown means students must stay where they are and leaving in the middle of one would be "inappropriate." Naomi's daughter, who is on the dance team, received a suspension and has to sit out the first two basketball games for her actions. (abc11)
- Of the 32 complaints filed with North Carolina's Exceptional Children Division from August 2021 to July 2022 in central N.C., around half of them were related to Wake County Public Schools. The complaints are from many difficulties parents have experienced trying to get their children access to public education, including schools refusing to evaluate children, failing to properly implement Individualized Education Plans and inability to get effective services. Parents are frustrated as schools either don't have the staff to help or have been ignoring their concerns. (abc11)
