Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Sanderson High School was under lockdown on Friday morning after a man was shot in the leg nearby. The incident occurred around 10:35 a.m. on the softball field next to Optimist pool. Police did not say if students were involved, but stated there is no direct impact to the public. The school lockdown was lifted around 11:35 a.m. The Raleigh Police Department had two additional officers present on school property. (abc11, WRAL)
  2. On Friday, Wake County announced changes to its COVID testing system as federal funding diminishes. Wake County is planning to reduce its weekly testing appointments from 11,600 to 2,500 by July 4. Testing will also only be available on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. July 29 will be the last day for drive-thru testing. Wake County says that factors such as at-home testing, other community testing locations and effective vaccine treatments have led to this change. (CBS17, WRAL) Raleigh was also visited by the White House pandemic team and was applauded for the COVID response. (WRAL)
  3. Pam McCord was a certified nursing assistance for more than 20 years, until a failed drug test cost her her job. During a workers' compensation precaution, McCord submitted to a drug test. She was shocked when she was told that it tested positive for cocaine. McCord believes the test was a mistake, maintaining that she has never used drugs in her life. McCord underwent a hair follicle test that are considered more accurate, and it came back negative. McCord is sharing her experience as a warning to others as she explores legal action. (WRAL)
  4. One student is injured after a sedan crashed into a school bus on Thursday afternoon. The school bus had high schoolers on board when the car crashed into the bus. The sedan was totaled and glass from the bus doors was shattered. The crash is still under investigation and the student was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. (CBS17)
  5. The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced Friday that the ramp from Interstate 40 West to I-440 West would be closed through the weekend. Exit 301 will be closed until Monday at 5 a.m. while the ramp is reconstructed. Drivers will need to stay on I-40 West and take Exit 300 for Rock Quarry Road exit to get back on I-40 East and access I-440 West. (WRAL)
