Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Police are searching for a suspect that led state troopers on a high speed chase in Raleigh, crashed their vehicle, and escaped into the woods. The chase began around 12:30 a.m. on I-40 when a driver did not stop as the patrol car attempted to pull them over for speeding. The driver reached speeds of 135 mph prior to the crash. (WRAL)
  2. The iconic round Holiday Inn on Hillsborough Street has been slatted for destruction, and now visions of downtown Raleigh's newest feature are in the works. This week, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants announced it would be opening a boutique hotel on the site. The project is expected to break ground at the end of 2023, with completion targeted for late 2025. The hotel will be part of the 20-story mixed-use development. (abc11, CBS17)
  3. Two students from Shaw University have been recognized by the White House, as 2022 HBCU Scholars. Nakaya Carter and Jameliah Pinder are receiving the honor for their "unique combination of academic achievements, campus leadership, civic engagement, and entrepreneurial spirit." The White House's HBCU Scholar Recognition Program aims to recognize the leaders and empower them with tools for excellence. (CBS17)
  4. The Blood Connection has sent units of blood to Uvalde, Texas as part of the national Blood Emergency Readiness Corps. TBC says they have more blood in reserve if needed, but they still have a specific need for O-negative blood donors. This activation is the fourth time since the creation in September 2021 that the BERC network has been called to provide blood in a national emergency. (CBS17)
  5. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman launched a criminal investigation into a local contractor. According to homeowners, Roger Simmons took thousands of dollars, and did not complete agreed upon work. Simmons already served prison time in 2019 for issues with his work, and was required to pay families back $70,000. In order to pay back the settlement, Simmons took new jobs under an alias. (WRAL)
