Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Athens Drive Magnet Hight School is investigating after a threat involving a racial slur was scribbled on a table. Principal Steve Mares announced the investigation after discovery of the threat via a post on social media. The Raleigh Police Department received a report from the school as the threat indicated a school shooting. Leads have already been established and depending on who is found responsible there could be school disciplinary and legal action taken. (CBS17, WRAL)
- North Carolina State radio broadcaster Gary Hahn will return to the air on January 14 following his suspension after making a comment regarding "illegal aliens" in El Paso, Texas. Learfield, the broadcasting partner of NCSU, confirmed that Hahn's suspension will end on Jan. 14 and he will return to his broadcasting duty. The city of El Paso has been a focus point of migrants crossing the border seeking asylum and a city representative has called on President Joe Biden to visit, saying the city is the "epicenter of the humanitarian migrant crisis." (abc11)
- The New Year's Day incident that led to one person being thrown from a motorcycle is now being investigated as a homicide. The victim was initially taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but on Wednesday police confirmed the man's death as they transition to a homicide investigation. The investigation is still ongoing and therefore the "manner of death" and the victim's identity will be released "at the appropriate time." (CBS17)
- Raleigh police took the time to host a "Walk With a Cop" event on Tuesday. The event gave community members the opportunity to have conversations and build relationships with law enforcement. The walk started at 10 a.m. and attracted parents and visitors in the park. (CBS17) The department has many more outreach events planned, as activists continue to voice skepticism at the department's policies. (INDY Week)
- Americans all over the country watched Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin experience a cardiac arrest during the team's game on Monday. Now the incident is driving interest in defibrillators among Triangle residents. Chris Mills, a former paramedic who now markets defibrillators has seen around 50 inquiries a day since Monday. Mills says that you can't wait for EMS or the fire department to arrive, and bystanders must get involved in order to have high quality CPR. (abc11)
