Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh Parks is gathering hundreds of new or gently used coats to give away to children this winter. The city has partnered with Coats Cause We Care and is hoping to get 500 coats to give away. If you would like to donate a coat, there are drop-off locations at various parks and the cut-off is November 18. (abc11)
  2. WRAL's Nights of Lights will be returning this year on November 20. The display features more than a mile of illuminated trees, festival lights, and local art installations. Last year organizers didn't have much time to plan but this year they have been working to create magical elves, a 12-foot Santa, and more. (WRAL)
  3. A Raleigh Police Department K-9 is competing in the first United States Police Canine Association Trials. The event is being held inside PNC Arena and airing on ESPN at a later date. K-9 Peppers of Raleigh is competing in the bomb detection portion of trials. (abc11)
  4. Raleigh fire crews responded to Logan's Garden Shop off West Peace Street around 4:00 pm on Sunday. Two sheds had caught fire in a storage area and crews were able to quickly get the fire under control. (CBS17)
  5. The Western Boulevard/Interstate-440 interchange's new diverging diamond is set to open today. "Unforeseen delays" caused the intersection opening to be pushed back from its original projection at 5:00 am yesterday. (CBS17)

  • It is the first day of Road Safety Week (technically a U.K. holiday, but fitting) and I felt like nothing was more appropriate for today. To celebrate, learn more about diverging diamond interchanges here.
  • In-person registration for the Raleigh Toys for Tots program is being held today. Babies and children up to age 13 are eligible, and parents must provide any form of government assistance to register. Today is the last day to register. (4:30 pm-6:00 pm)
  • The City of Raleigh is looking for volunteer basketball coaches to help with the youth league. Training is provided. (Spectrum News 1)
  • If you're interested in being a part of Garner Performing Arts Center's Showcase of Talent, auditions are today at 5:00 pm.
