Happy National 401(K) Day,

Now I do need to start by letting you know that a reader did kindly email me to point out a small typo in yesterday's newsletter. This November 20th, please don't go out at 9:30pm hoping for a parade, because you'll be 12h too late. 9:30 am is the correct time and I appreciate the fact check. Sorry for that everyone. With that being said, check out the news, events, and more below!

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The North Carolina State Senate has passed a bill that will help landlords apply for assistance through the HOPE Program. Landlords will be able to refer tenants to the program which will allow the state to follow up with them. Laura Hogshead, director of the NC Office of Recovery and Resiliency fears the change could have the unintended consequence of delaying payments, and one landlord expresses challenges that landlords face communicating with evacuated tenants. The other provision of the bill that is headed to the House is allowance of HOPE funds to be used to cover costs of hotel or motel rooms. (CBS17)
  2. A dispute in the parking lot of a Circle K gas station devolved into a hit and run investigation on Thursday morning. The clerk said there was an argument among five people around 1:30 am, and as it escalated three individuals sped off, hitting a pedestrian. The victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police are hoping that surveillance video will help them find the car as well as the driver responsible for the hit-and-run. (WRAL)
  3. Heavy rain in Raleigh left roads closed and traffic slowed mid-day Thursday. The heavy rainfall led to Flash Flood Warnings in Raleigh and some surrounding cities. On Atlantic Avenue a water rescue took place when a car was swamped by floodwaters. Police also had to block some lanes on the 440 Beltline due to high water levels. (Spectrum News 1)
  4. While the alpha coronavirus was relatively tame in younger individuals, the delta variant now sees children accounting for more than 30% of COVID-19 cases. UNC Health reported on Tuesday that of the 10 COVID-19 pediatric patients in the hospital, five of them were in the pediatric ICU. Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayettville even reported having one child that had to be put on a ventilator. At this time the DHHS data shows that 41.6% of children 12-17 are vaccinated. (WRAL)
  5. Worker shortages have been rampant in just about every industry over the past several months. Everyone from nurses to restaurant workers is in demand. Yesterday, three industries spoke out about the struggles they are facing. Following the passionate Wake County School Board meeting, the district is turning much of its attention towards attracting teachers to fill the vacancies. (abc11) Wake County bus drivers are also speaking out about the stressors they are facing amidst the driver shortage. (CBS17) The other occupation struggling to make up for vacant positions is First Responders. Paramedics are hopeful that the Emergency Medical Sciences program will help as it allows students to learn while working in the field, but they still have around 8-10 ambulances out of service due to staffing shortages. (Spectrum News 1)
