- On Friday, people gathered outside of the state capitol with signs in hand to show support for the people of Ukraine. During the event, those present heard speakers and lit candles during a vigil. Donna Goldstein, a board member with the Ukrainian Association of North Carolina said the rally was an opportunity for people to come together, including the nearly 30-50 Ukraine families who came to the Triangle through the Uniting for Ukraine program. Also in attendance, Kvita Oleschuck left Ukraine two days before the war started. (CBS17)
- Nationally, bars and restaurants are struggling to keep up with staffing demands, but several Raleigh restaurants are completely staffed up and feeling in a much better place than a year ago. Census data from late June to mid-July show that nearly four million Americans didn't work due to COVID, and in the same period last year, there were only 1.8 million unemployed. The Ale House has fully staffed at some of its locations and has seen a 20% increase in customer volume from June to July. (abc11)
- N.C State Fair competitions for 2022 are now open for a variety of favorite and new competitions. In 2021, more than 36,000 items were entered into competitions at the fair. A majority of competition entry deadlines are September 15, and exhibitors must register prior to the entry deadline. Competitors can enter by mailing in entry forms or online using the ShoWorks app. (Chatham Journal)

From my notebook:
- It's National Farmers Market Week and the State Farmers Market is open seven days a week in our own backyard!
- A lot of people ask me to feature something for people who are new to the area. I'm definitely not opposed to the idea, but it's also an incredibly nonspecific request. I try to feature my "holidays" to include things I might not normally, but if that's not enough, check out This is Raleigh's 90-plus things to do in Raleigh NC. (bucket list).
