Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh rentals have been a major topic of conversation throughout the pandemic. Several new reports have been released that paint a mixed picture of the current situation. According to an August report from Rent.com, Raleigh is one of the areas that has seen the largest increase in rent within the last year. (WNCT9) According to Realtor.com, rental prices across North Carolina are leveling off. (abc11) Finally, according to the National Multifamily Housing Coalition and National Apartment Association, Raleigh ranks ninth in the nation for apartment shortages. The city is working to create more affordable housing through the $80 million Affordable Housing Bond that was passed in November 2020. (Spectrum News 1)
  2. Police arrested Tyler Kirby on Thursday after they say he shot through the back window of a car that was occupied by three people. Maya Sherrod was riding in the back of the car and was shot in the head. She was taken to the hospital to be treated for her serious injuries, and to ensure the safety of the baby she is pregnant with. Kirby appeared in court, facing charges including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and shooting into an occupied vehicle. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. Shopping at Crabtree Valley Mall was halted on Saturday night after a fight broke out, leading to what people believed to be gunshots. Some shoppers claimed to have heard shots, while other patrons reacted to the crowds running to safety. Traffic was backed up for miles around the mall as people attempted to leave the site. Police said that no one has been charged at this time. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  4. Officials confirmed that a UNC Health Rex pediatric at UNC Rex Hospital on Lake Boone Trail will be closing. They said the closure is due to the "overwhelming need for adult patient beds and the low number of pediatric patients needing care at UNC Health Rex." UNC Rex is part of the UNC system that includes UNC Children's which is ranked among the nation's top children's hospitals. The emergency department will continue to care for pediatric patients. (CBS17, WRAL)
  5. A new ramp has opened along the Jones Franklin Road interchange on I-440 as the North Carolina Department of Transportation prepares to demolish an old bridge over the Raleigh beltline. The existing Jones Franklin Road Bridge will be torn down sometime next week. Road work will take place nightly for the next couple of weeks, with nightly lane closures beginning at 9 p.m. and full closures from midnight to 5 a.m. (CBS17)
  6. An artist that was visiting Cary to participate in the Lazy Daze Arts Festival said that his trailer full of pottery, a tent, tables and more was stolen. Robin Rodgers came from Atlanta and claims that the items stolen totaled over $10,000 in value. Rodgers has attended arts festivals around the country for a living and has now lost everything after a thief disconnected the rented U-Haul and stole the trailer. (WRAL)
