Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- This year there is one thing notably different from other election years, candidates are opting out of debates. Republican congressmen Ted Budd declined to debate leading up to this year's U.S. Senate primary, and Democratic candidate Cheri Beasley did not debate as all serious contenders dropped out of the race. The election is just around the corner in November, and no debates are scheduled between the two candidates, although the opportunity has presented itself. Beasley has expressed willingness to debate, and says the people of North Carolina deserve to hear from candidates. (CBS17) Local candidate forums will be held, beginning today for District B. (WakeUp Wake County)
- An inmate at Central Prison in Raleigh died on Friday morning after being assaulted by other inmates with a weapon. The victim, Ronald S. Rhodes was being held at the facility temporarily while awaiting trial, facing charges including attempted rape, kidnapping and extortion in 2013. The prison's first responders performed life-saving measures on Rhodes until the paramedics arrived. The paramedics also attempted life-saving measures, but Rhodes was pronounced dead at 10:32 a.m. State Capitol Police and the Department of Public Safety are investigating the incident. (CBS17, WRAL)
- Wake County foreclosures are back to pre-pandemic levels, up 425% from this time last year. This week, ATTOM released national findings for foreclosure proceedings in August. Experts said that the numbers are not incredibly surprising, as pauses protecting those who could not make mortgage payments kept foreclosures "artificially low." Although foreclosures are on the rise, some facing the foreclosures are still in a positive equity situation thanks to the growth in the area. (CBS17, WRAL, WRAL TechWire)
- A Raleigh mother is spreading awareness as she shares a video that her daughter took of a fight in her school. Annamarie Caballero says that her daughter is a freshman at Wakefield High School, and witnessed a fight that apparently broke out into several smaller fights. After sharing the video of the fight, Caballero has received comments, messages, and phone calls from other concerned parents, but no communication from the school itself. According to Wake County Schools, the SRO and staff were able to break up the fight and detained several juveniles. (CBS17)
- The town of Cary has been named the safest city in America. Although the area is not completely free of crime, instances happen far less than in neighboring communities. Good Hire is a background check company that uses FBI crime data to determine the safest and least safe cities in the country. The study looked at property, violent and society crimes and ranked each city based on its rate of offenses per 1,000 people. (abc11)

From my notebook:
- It's World Suicide Prevention Day, and although I really enjoy featuring random food days and connecting you with awesome places to go in Raleigh, I felt this was the day most relevant to the community. After a 13-year-old at Wendell Middle School died by suicide on Tuesday, his family is spreading the word to "check on your kids." UNC Health has a comprehensive list of resources and warning signs.
- Raleigh's 18th Annual Neighborhood Exchange is less than two weeks away at Lions Park. (City of Raleigh Twitter)
- If you're looking for new restaurants and foodie experiences, check out WRAL's Foodie News. (WRAL)
- Across the street from Raleigh Iron Works, Triangle Rock Club and Grubb Ventures are working together to create Salvage Yard, a world-class climbing and fitness complex. (RaleighMag)
Thanks for following along and staying informed. See you all tomorrow morning for another update!
