Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. NBA player and Raleigh native DevonGraham was arrested early Thursday in Raleigh by a trooper with the Highway Patrol around 3 a.m. for driving while impaired. Graham played at Broughton High School, then for four years at Kansas before being drafted in the second round of the 2018 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He was traded to the Charlotte Hornets before going to play for the New Orleans Pelicans. (FOX8, WRAL)
  2. On Tuesday, the state Court of Appeals ruled that North Carolina restaurants cannot be compensated for financial losses caused by coronavirus closures through their commercial insurance policies. The ruling was unanimous by a three-judge panel and reverses the October 2020 decision by Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson. The Tuesday opinion stated that government restrictions didn't result in "direct physical loss or damage to the property" that are required for payouts. (abc11)
  3. The first case of the monkeypox virus has been detected in Wake County according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Health officials confirmed the case on Wednesday and said that the patient is home isolating and the department is working on contact tracing. This is the third case identified in North Carolina, among more than 500 across the United States. Symptoms are typically flu-like, but also including a rash with pimples or blisters and spreads through skin-to-skin contact. (abc11, Spectrum News 1)
  4. Early voting began Thursday for the July 26 municipal elections. Wake County voters still must select the candidate who will move forward as the Democratic sheriff candidate in a runoff election. Either Willie Rowe or incumbent Gerald Baker will face Republican challenger Donnie Harrison in November. Those who participated in the Republican ballot for the sheriffs race will be ineligible to vote in the Democratic runoff. (WRAL)
  5. Advocates gathered in Raleigh once again on Wednesday to call for an arrest warrant to be served on Carolyn Bryant Donham in the death of 14-year-old Emmett Till. Dozens of people gathered demanding the decades-old arrest warrant be served, along with calls for an "eviction notice," for her to get out of the state. Till's family and demonstrators say that they are hoping for cooperation between North Carolina and Mississippi to have Donham extradited back to Mississippi to be arrested. A senior living facility was on a brief lockdown as demonstrators looked for Donham, who is now 87 years old. (CBS17, INDY Week, WRAL)

From our sponsor:

Are you a Raleigh resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where Raleigh Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
