John Chavis Memorial Park + Triangle National Cyber Scholars

Wow! There was almost too much to write about for today. From the incredible new park slated to open to the legislation and events happening in Raleigh. There's also some incredible high schoolers in our area that I'm sure you'll be as excited and proud as I am to hear about. Check out all the details below.

  1. The John Chavis Memorial Park is set to open on June 12 at 10:30am. The $18 million park features a 41,600 square feet of community center, a splash pad, playground, and carousel. The park started in 1937 as a recreational center during segregation and community members have been working to have it upgraded since 1971. After funding came in 2014, the beautiful upgraded park will finally be open to the public. (SpectrumNews1)
  2. The North Carolina House lawmakers have passed a bill to eliminate the additional $300 a week in unemployment funds. The bill will now proceed to the Senate, but NC will likely soon join the 25 other states who have canceled those benefits early. (WRAL, WBTV)
  3. The man responsible for shooting Deputy Ronald Waller has been charged and is being held on a $4 million bond. Eddie Craig, 32, fired an AK-47 while being served an eviction notice by Waller and two other deputies. He faces multiple charges including attempted murder. His mother says that he has struggled with mental illness for a long time. (CBS17)
  4. A 34-year-old Raleigh man has been accused of carjacking a taxi at knifepoint on Wednesday. Kenneth Wesley Lloyd has been charged with common law robbery, second degree kidnapping, and robbery with a dangerous weapons. The day after his booking, he attempted to escape custody and has received additional charges for attempting to flee. (WRAL)
  5. 18 students, mainly located in the Triangle, have been named "National Cyber Scholars" after winning a nationwide cybersecurity competition. They also won scholarships in the 48-hour competition. (WNCT)

  • Dozens of civil rights leaders have come to Raleigh to meet with Gov. Roy Cooper in order to get more transparency in the killing of Andrew Brown, Jr. In order for the public to see body camera footage they must file a petition in superior court and receive permission from a judge. (Fox8)
  • Gov. Roy Cooper has officially proclaimed June as Pride Month in North Carolina in remembrance of the Stonewall Riots of 1969. (CBS17)
  • Local high-schooler, Ava Jeffs has started a nonprofit for breast cancer detection. Learn more about her story here (abc11), and if you would like to donate, check out the nonprofit's website Generations United.
