Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The Wake County Board of Commissioners meeting was forced to move to a virtual format after commissioners tested positive for COVID-19. The county tweeted that the meeting would move online, but did not specify which commissioners tested positive. The live stream of the 3:00 pm meeting was made available at WakeGOV. (WRAL) COVID-19 cases in North Carolina are rising, however UNC Health workers have not seen an increase in treatment demand. (CBS17)
  2. City planners are working on the final design for Lake Wheeler Road's improvement project. The project hopes to make the stretch from South Saunders Street to Maywood Avenue safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists. The city will open a new survey for resident input today, running until June 1. This project comes as a result of the Dix Edge Area Study to develop a growth plan for the area south of Dorothea Dix Park over the next 20 years. (CBS17)
  3. AAA reports that the average gas price in the Raleigh area has reached $4.10 per gallon. The weekly increase is one of the largest that the state has experienced with prices $0.27 above last month, and $1.37 over last year. The Raleigh average is still below the national average at $4.33. (WRAL)
  4. A crowd gathered outside of the capitol grounds on Mother's Day in support of Ukraine. In attendance were members of the local Ukrainian community, including one teen who fled as the invasion began. The group expressed feelings of reassurance as First Lady Jill Biden met with Ukraine's first lady at a shelter for women migrants and their children on the western side of the country. (abc11)
  5. Emergency calls have been released from RPD officers regarding the Saturday afternoon incident that took the life of one unidentified male. Chief Estella Patterson says that she intends to ask for release of body camera and building camera footage to be released. Currently four officers are on leave while an internal investigation along with the SBI look into the event. (abc11) A passerby has also shared video of the moments leading up to the shooting, as gunshots can be heard at the tail end of the clip. (WRAL)
