Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Following a weekend that saw two killed and three injured from shootings, leaders are talking about ways they can target violence from the start. Raleigh-Apex NAACP President Gerald Givens Jr. is working with the Raleigh City Council and Raleigh police. He is also meeting with Cure Violence, a Chicago based group, to see if their model could help Raleigh. City leaders are working to determine the status of a $2 million grant that will go toward reducing gun violence. (CBS17)
- The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Raleigh Police were seen conducting a raid on two homes in southeast Raleigh on Tuesday morning. A resident in the neighborhood says they were awoken around 6:00 am to a loudspeaker telling a neighbor to exit their home. Raleigh police assisted in the raid, but were not informed of the specifics by the FBI. (CBS17)
- Moral Monday returned to Raleigh and hundreds came out to join the fight for a workable living wage. Reverend William Barber says that the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the injustices as those deemed "essential" are treated as expendable. The Poor People's Campaign and Low-Wage Workers Assembly are working together in various cities to encourage people to join the larger efforts in Washington D.C. on June 18. (abc11)
- On Tuesday morning a woman crashed her car into the glass window of the Super 8 Motel on Capital Boulevard. The incident took place just before 2:30 am, after the driver accidentally hit the accelerate instead of the brake. No one was injured and police are still investigating the incident. (WRAL, CBS17)
- North Carolina's Supreme Court has voted to strike down the state law that prevented people convicted of felonies from registering to vote. The decision on Monday expands the preliminary injunction issued last August. The decision could restore voting rights for tens of thousands of people previously convicted. (WCNC)
