Legal Loophole Dismisses Disapproval + Inspirational Individuals
Here's the latest from Raleigh, delivered straight to your inbox.

Happy Responsible Dog Ownership Day,
I wanted to start off by providing an update that I don't necessarily consider one of the top stories today, but I do think is an important follow up for everyone to know. The man killed outside a Raleigh nightclub was shot by a security guard after showing up armed, threatening the club. (abc11) I think it's an important follow up, to yesterday that I don't want to get glossed over.
On that note, check out all the most current news, events, and more below! There's some seriously inspirational people in our area to note.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- There has been ongoing debate between the Westover neighborhood and the NC State Fair. Residents of the neighborhood have been pushing back on the creation of a parking lot where a 19 acre forest stood. The North Carolina State Fair, desperate for a parking for the October 14-24 State Fair, exploited a legal loophole to put an end to the pushback and begin the project. The government bulldozed 19 acres of pines and hardwoods for a lot that will accommodate more than 2,400 vehicles. The loophole allows the Department of Agriculture to exempt its own projects, paid for by tax dollars, from stricter environmental rules. (INDY Week)
- The City of Raleigh is seeking input from residents regarding the new bus rapid transit route planned for New Bern Avenue and 10 other stations. Beginning Monday the city will be hosting a community workshop to allow community members to meet with city planners and consultants to pitch ideas and ask questions. Some of the options the city is considering include affordable housing, reducing carbon emissions, placing convenience locations, and making residents more comfortable walking around the areas. CBS17 lists all the event locations and times. (CBS17)
- Graham Settle is a Raleigh resident and retired US Diplomat who spent years overseas, including time in Afghanistan. Settle has joined a group of private individuals to aid some 100 people to flee Afghanistan after being left behind by US troops. The group of people include women, children, toddlers, and American allies who have been shuffled from safe house to safe house and are running out of time. Settle asks that people call their congressmen and senators to help get those individuals out. (abc11)
- An inspirational Raleigh 10-year-old is raising money through her talents and experience being born with a cleft palate. Violet Ake met her parents nine years ago, just before her first birthday, and was officially adopted when she was 17 months old. The Akes knew that Duke University Hospital was one of the best places to get the care she would need, and when spending time with Violet, the team at Duke noticed her drawings. The team at Duke Health encouraged her to write and illustrate her own book to help children facing the same surgeries and treatments. Violet was excited to take on the project, and insisted that all the proceeds go to Duke's "Smile Together Foundation." The Akes will be hosting a book signing on Sunday outside Forest Hills Baptist Church. (WRAL)
- Cintia Huddleston, a nurse from Raleigh, was shocked when she discovered that she was given a meningitis shot instead of the first of her COVID-19 vaccination doses. Huddleston recalls discussing the vaccine options with the CVS employee before settling on the Moderna vaccine, however the woman who gave shot told Huddleston, "I thought you said you wanted Meningitis." Following this incident, Huddleston has contacted a lawyer and the North Carolina Pharmacy Board is investigating the incident. (abc11, WRAL)

Alright friends, so this is completely irrelevant, but I just want to share. While choosing a holiday to celebrate, I obviously aim to link it back to something you can connect with in Raleigh. Today that meant passing over "Locate an Old Friend Day," which really jumped out at me. My husband and I were actually friends in Elementary School before losing touch when I moved to North Carolina. Obviously that wasn't the end to our story, and today I really just want to encourage you to reconnect with someone. If there's a person in your life that you can't seem to get off your brain, be bold today. You never know what could happen! Until tomorrow friends...
