Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson appointed the city's first LGBTQ+ liaison to help improve community relations between the two groups. The new position is an addition to Michael Ballen's job of community policing coordinator. Last year, Raleigh was ranked poorly by the Human Rights Council's Municipal Equality Index, and Ballen hopes this role will help the LGBTQ+ community will be able to see that there is somebody in the police department to work, advocate and build relationships with them. (WRAL)
- Demolition has officially begun at Cary Towne Center Mall as Epic Games prepares to build its new headquarters. WRAL's Hidden Historian collected memories and vintage photos to create an archive of the mall's history and stories. (WRAL)
- North Raleigh residents are fighting a proposed development that could stress the Neuse River water basin. If the city of Raleigh approves the new zoning laws, developers will be able to build more than 14 residential units per acre as opposed to the one unit currently allowed. Residents spoke out in a February hearing regarding concerns of drinking water quality and traffic concerns. (WRAL)
- Earlier this week, the North Carolina General Assembly wrapped up a legislative session that began in January 2021. State legislators agree that changes need to me made regarding how the General Assembly functions, but they are not in agreement on what must happen. The legislature is part time and rank and file members receive just under $14,000 per year plus a daily payment for meals and lodging when in Raleigh. (CBS17)
- A Durham man that many may recognize, Shane Ryan, is raising awareness via Twitter, that your license may be suspended without your knowledge. Ryan was surprised to discover that his license was suspended, he missed a hearing to appeal, and was hit with late fees. In North Carolina, a speeding conviction for driving more than 15 mph over the speed limit results in an automatic 30 day suspension of your license, but it can take months for the state to be notified of the conviction.
