Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Members of the Little John Social Club are looking for answers after one of their members was killed in a hit-and-run crash last week. The driver who killed Joseph Nunn is still on the run after the fatal wreck on Rock Quarry Road on Sept. 16. Members of the group have been riding the streets searching for a gray Honda Accord with front end damage. The group originally began after the death of John Buchanan's son in 2007. He was hit by a car on Hillsborough Street. Buchanan says the group will not give up looking for justice for their friend, even if it takes years. (WRAL)
  2. In mid-August, Raleigh hosted a gun buyback event that saw 267 guns exchanged for gift cards. According to Jeff Welty, a professor of public law and government at the University of North Carolina School of Government, there isn't much evidence to show that the program is effective at reducing violent crime. A majority of those who participated were turning in unwanted guns in their homes. Welty says that a majority of guns that are used in crim tend to be semi-automatic. The Raleigh Police Department confirmed that none of the 267 guns turned in during the event were automatic or semi-automatic. (abc11)
  3. The Raleigh Police Department has made an arrest in relation to the targeted shooting that left one woman dead on Wednesday morning. Officers were called to Calumet Drive near WakeMed Raleigh around 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Police found Symantia Nekita Blythe with multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. Deran Anthony Miles was arrested in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina where he has been charged with the murder. (CBS17)
  4. Community leaders and equity advocates from across North Carolina gathered at NC State's campus to discuss equity across the state and how Census data can help. The NC Counts Coalition's "We Still Count" conference is working to build long term partnerships to improve equity. Participants discussed the 2020 Census and findings to help plan for the 2030 Census. (abc11)
  5. Between 2014 and 2021, some Raleigh healthcare companies reportedly falsified physician orders. On Wednesday, Kala Sloan Vice president of operations for the companies plead guilty to charges. Prosecutors said she knowingly submitted forged documents to cover prior false billings. In October 2020, Cigna audited claims and discovered the discrepancies that totaled millions in false claims. (CBS17)
  6. This weekend will be the last weekend for The Raleigh Market, as it prepares for the opening of the North Carolina State Fair. The Raleigh Market will temporarily leave the fairground to make room for fair attractions and will remain closed through the month of October. (Richmond Observer) The fair began in 1853 and returns October 13-23. Daily showtimes and vendor lists are already available for the upcoming festivities. (WXII12)
