Happy National Prosecco Day,

Today we got a sneak peek into the future of the Raleigh Police Department as it's new chief was sworn in, a sneak peek into the future of Wake County as Census data came back, and a celebration of NC manufacturers. All that, events, and more are below.

Today's weather, 8/13: Humid throughout the day. High: 95 Low: 77.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The numbers released by the Census Bureau on Thursday show that Wake County remains the largest county in North Carolina. Wake County has 1,129,420 people residing in the area, representing a 25% growth over the 2010 census numbers. The population in Raleigh alone has increased by 15%. Overall the Census officials said that some of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas were in the South. (CBS17) Now that official figures have been released, North Carolina can begin to redraw the political districts. (Spectrum News 1)
  2. The new Chief of Police Estella Patterson has been officially sworn in as of Thursday. She spoke about her passion for church, family, and community while outlining her priorities for the Raleigh Police Department. Her top three priorities in the new role are strengthening police and community trust, reducing violent crime, and assessing internal structures and morale within the RPD. One advantage Estella Patterson brings to the role is her existing certification to be a police officer in North Carolina meaning she can hit the ground running. (WRAL)
  3. The North Carolina Chamber is leading a contest to celebrate the state's manufacturers. The contest aims to find the coolest products manufactured in North Carolina. Chamber members hope the contest will bring traffic and exposure to North Carolina. The National Association of Manufacturers released statistics showing that the state's total manufacturing output was $101.6 billion in 2019. Anyone over the age of 13 can submit a product into the competition now. (CBS17)
  4. North Carolina has reached a milestone in COVID-19 vaccinations, the 10 millionth dose has been administered. (CBS17) This milestone is reached while NC has 1.1 million total cases, with hospitalizations over 2,400, representing the highest number since February 6th. (CBS17) Among the hospitalizations, there is a notable increase in younger patients. In January the average age of hospitalized COVID-19 patients was 70, and it has now dropped to an average around 50. NCDHHS reports that 94% of new cases are among the unvaccinated. (abc11)
  5. With the surge in Raleigh residents, developers can't build housing options fast enough. The Line at Smoky Hollow in downtown Raleigh opened nine months ago and is already 95% full. Kane Realty has planned for 2,000 more units to be built around the Triangle, and its development manager Rob Reid says that with limited availability he is continuing to see prices increasing. New properties range from $1,700 to $2,000 for a one-bedroom apartment. (CBS17)
