Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The North Carolina Department of Labor began inspecting all 96 rides that are set to be featured at the fair, prior to opening Thursday. Rides are required to meet 100% of manufacturer's specifications before operating. Inspectors look at everything including: cracks, corrosion, seatbelt issues and speed of the ride. Rides are disassembled and travel on trucks between events, and must be thoroughly inspected. (abc11, WECT)
  2. Law enforcement agencies are also gearing up to protect fairgoers. State law prohibits any registered sex offender to attend state fairs. Last month, four registered offenders were caught, arrested and charged at the North Carolina Mountain State Fair. State Fair Chief of Police Tony Prignano says that he will have 350 officers from various agencies on the grounds daily. There are also multiple cameras positioned at gates and other measures in place that will be enforced with the help of 38 different law enforcement agencies. (WRAL)
  3. Marbles Kids Museum is working on a $7 million expansion. The expansion would include a makeover of the downtown Raleigh campus and exploring plans to reach more families through various "spokes." Each smaller location would feature a different theme or focus. The renovation would also give the central courtyard climbing structures, green space and interactive art and turn the Tree Tunes courtyard into a two-story exhibit that would give kids experience exploring skilled trades. (WRAL)
  4. Splash Car Wash on Ten Ten Road is bringing back the haunted car wash this year, and it promises to be even scarier than last year. The event will only run from October 28 through 31, from 7 - 10 pm. The car wash will be transformed into a "Night of Nightmares" with clowns, zombies, graveyards and a haunted swamp shack. Tickets will cost $25 per vehicle. (CBS17, Splash Carwash)
  5. On Tuesday, someone attempted to rob the Wells Fargo Bank on New Bern in broad daylight. Officers responded to the report of an attempted robbery around 9:15 a.m. The suspect did not appear to have a weapon, but presented the tellers with a note demanding money. The tellers did not comply and he fled on foot across New Bern Avenue towards Corporation Drive. An investigation is underway. (CBS17, WRAL)
