Here are the top three stories in Raleigh today:
- Dozens were in attendance for the March for Our Lives rally in Raleigh on Saturday. The Raleigh rally was one of more than 400 demonstrations organized by the group founded by survivors of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School survivors. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL) On Sunday, both of North Carolina's senators joined a bipartisan group of senators announcing an agreement on gun reform legislation. (CBS17)
- Part of U.S. 1/Capital Boulevard was closed on Saturday night after three children were struck by a minivan while crossing the road. The incident was reported around 8:50 p.m. as the three were crossing in an area that was not a crosswalk. Two teenagers and a 9-year-old were taken to a nearby hospital, but were not suffering serious injuries. The van was travelling at a low speed. The driver remained at the scene following the incident, and is unlikely to face charges. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina General Assembly has continued its short session in Raleigh last week, and here is a round up of some of what has been discussed:
- Democrats in Raleigh called for the General Assembly to pass a series of bills related to gun access, urging the state to not wait until Congress takes action. (CBS17, WWAYTV3)
- Two bills are discussing differing legalizations of marijuana use. Senate Bill 711, or the NC Compassionate Care Act to legalize medical use, was approved in the Senate and has moved to the House of Representatives to be further reviewed. Senate Bill 765 would legalize the possession of up to 2 ounces of marijuana for individuals 21 and older and is still under consideration in the Senate. (Port City Daily)
- The PFAS Pollution and Polluter Liability bill is being discussed that would give state regulators the ability to fine polluters of "forever chemicals." (Spectrum News 1)
- House Bill 144 is part of the larger Medicaid transformation and would create a statewide insurance network to provide for the more than 11,000 people in the foster care system. (WUNC)
