Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. More than 100 people gathered around the Memorial Tower at NC State on Saturday in support of Iranian protestors. The protests began in September when Mahsa Amini died in police custody after allegedly violating hijab rules in Tehran. Iranian students at NC State have a lot of concerns for their loved ones back home, and families in the area came out to remember how lucky they are. (abc11)
  2. On what would have been Mary Marshall's wedding day, family, friends and community members gathered to honor her in a celebration of life. The stage had photos, lanterns, fall leaves and pumpkins that would have been incorporated in her intimate wedding ceremony. Her fiancé, Robert Steele, said that she loved this kind of weather and the season. Friends and family talked about who she was in life and the impact she had on others. Steele also said that following the memorial service on Saturday, he would get the opportunity to see photos of Marshall in her wedding dress from the last fitting for the first time. Marshall's sister Meaghan McCrickard took time to thank friends and the community for the love and support. (CBS17, WRAL)
  3. Saturday night saw two crashes with notable, but non-fatal implications in Raleigh. This occurred amidst the state's "Booze It & Lose It" campaign that anticipates wrecks leading up to Halloween, although it is unclear if alcohol was a factor in any of the wrecks.
    1. A crash caused a power outage on Glenwood Avenue on Saturday night. Around 10:30 p.m., officers said that a car crashed into a utility pole near Washington Street. Police tweeted that Glenwood Avenue was closed and power was out from Peace Street to Wade Avenue. Those who were forced to drive through the area were reminded that intersections with inoperable traffic lights should be treated as four-way stops. (CBS17)
    2. In North Raleigh, a man flipped the car he was driving in a neighborhood while distracted by a cellphone. The incident was reported just before 7:10 p.m. on Thorpshire Drive in a neighborhood off Harps Mill Road. According to Raleigh Police, the man was driving a passenger car along the road and crashed into at least one parked car, causing his vehicle to flip and land on its roof. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Police have not determined if a ticket will be issued, and they are unsure if he was texting or talking on the phone at the time of the crash. (CBS17)
  4. Police in Cary are also investigating what they believed to be a car crash, until arriving and discovering that the driver was suffering from gunshot wounds. Cary Police officers responded to the crash around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at O'Kelly Chapel and Parkside Main. Police are still investigating and have not released the victim's name or condition yet. (abc11) Raleigh police are also investigating the death of a pedestrian on Friday night on New Bern Avenue. The driver remained at the scene, and it is unclear if charges will be filed. (CBS17)
  5. A new pop-up burrito stand in Raleigh is pulling produce only from Raleigh City Farms community garden. According to a 2022 report of the best food truck cities in America, Raleigh has the second most food trucks per capita in the United States. Ervin Williams wanted to take advantage of the food truck scene in Raleigh, and began a pop-up stand known as AM:PM Burritos. Williams' wife, Monet Bush helps the endeavor grow by picking up produce from the community garden and helping advertise. The goal of AM:PM Burritos is to have everything supplied by local farmers, as collaboration with other local community members is important to Williams. (Spectrum News 1)

Patch deal of the day:

Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don't need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
