Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- A "mass rally" was held downtown on Monday to demand changes that will reduce poverty. The rally was organized by the Poor People's Campaign to pressure state lawmakers to make changes. The rally was part of a national movement leading to Moral Monday that will be held in June in Washington D.C. (WRAL)
- Early Monday morning, a Raleigh man was killed while fleeing police in Sanford. Scott Reid was being pursued by law enforcement after driving his vehicle through the front of a convenience store. During the pursuit, Reid crashed head-on with another car. Reid died at the scene and two others were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. (WRAL)
- The State Highway Patrol will be hosting an advanced driving skills course for teenagers in Raleigh. The number of teen drivers killed in N.C. is up 10% in the last 5 years, and according to one of the program instructors, every teenager that goes through decreases the likelihood that they will e involved in a crash by 64%. - Now that the Biden Administration will be welcoming 100,000 Ukrainian refugees into the United States, Triangle organizations are stepping up to provide services. Welcome House Raleigh provides temporary housing for refugees and asylum seekers, and it is prepared with beds, food, and a place to call home. (CBS17) Rise Against Hunger is also helping Ukrainian refugees by providing aid for refugees arriving in reception centers. (CBS17)
