Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. While Raleigh police continue to investigate the fatal accident that took place during the Raleigh Parade, new information has come to light regarding the driver Landen Christopher Glass. Glass, from Goode, Virginia, has been previously cited in 2021 for improper equipment, speeding and not having a vehicle inspection. According to records, he was "assigned to driver improvement." Warrants also show that Glass works on vehicle safety systems with W & M Sales and Service. CC & Co. Dance Complex issued a statement on Saturday asking people to "refrain from judgment regarding what happened until we know more and the authorities have finished their investigation." (abc11, CBS17)
  2. The memorial for the young girl who was killed during the Raleigh parade has continued to grow after the accident. Many Raleigh residents have felt compelled to extend their love and support as they process their own emotions regarding the incident. Wake County Schools sent out a letter to parents highlighting resources and tools available for children who may have witnessed the event process their grief. (abc11)
  3. A fire at the Hilton Garden Inn on Arrow Drive off Glenwood, had to be evacuated after a fire broke out on Sunday night. The fire began in a room on the fifth floor at the hotel, and an investigation is underway into what caused the fire. The hotel's sprinkler system was activated, helping contain the blaze until more than 60 firefighters responded to the scene. The building is considered a high-rise structure since it is seven-stories tall, but crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. (CBS17, WRAL)
  4. Local LGBTQ+ advocates are calling for better gun laws following the mass shooting at a Colorado nightclub on Saturday. Timothy Lemuel owns Ruby Deluxe in Raleigh and says that, "It's a travesty that could be avoided easily by voting for non anti-queer, transphobic, queerphobic politicians." Candis Cox with the LGBTQ Center of Durham shared the story of her friend who was injured while at Club-Q on vacation, and suffered seven gunshots while attempting to flee. Equality N.C. also released a statement on Sunday regarding the shooting, including "There's still a lot we don't know, but we do know this: we are under attack." (abc11, abc11)
  5. Police are investigating after a single car crash led to one car being overturned on I-40. According to the Raleigh Police Department, the ramp at exit 290 was closed for just over an hour around 5 a.m. Police have not been able to locate the driver who is believed to have fled the scene after overturning the vehicle.
