Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. As Memorial Day approaches, state officials are planning for their annual drunk driving crackdown. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the State Highway Patrol and Mothers Against Drunk Driving are preparing for their annual "On the Road, On the Water, Don't Drink and Drive" campaign. Leading up to and throughout the holiday weekend, law enforcement will conduct sobriety checkpoints and promote public awareness to deter operating vehicles while intoxicated. (CBS17)
  2. Raleigh and Durham have been collectively ranked at number six on the U.S. News & World Report's list of best places to live in the U.S. for 2022-2023. The rankings reviewed the 150 most populous metro areas and ranked the areas based on an analysis of public data and user opinions. The new ranking actually represents a drop in popularity. In 2021, we were ranked number two. (WRAL)
  3. The Wake County Board of Education is considering raising school meal prices next fall by a quarter, as families will no longer broadly receive free meals. Under the proposal the price of both breakfast and lunch would increase by $0.25 as part of the districts "multi-year" plan to adjust meal prices to manage cost increases. The COVID-era federal rule will come to an end beginning July 1 if Congress does not renew the funding. (WRAL)
  4. A crew working in a trench hit a gas line, triggering a leak for more than an hour in downtown Raleigh on Monday afternoon. According to Raleigh fire battalion chief Chris Wilson, the leak was reported just after 4:20 p.m. and was repaired around 5:45 p.m. Firefighters and hazmat responders worked to fix the leak caused by third-party crews with Dominion Energy. (CBS17)
  5. Shaw University has revealed its plan to make the school more competitive to new students by generating more income for the school. Shaw is trying to get its neighbors on board as the university seeks to lease its land to developers for new construction that will benefit students and the community. The university is expected to ask the Raleigh City Council to rezone some it its 28 acres of land in order to allow for greater flexibility of what can be built there. (abc11)
