Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Bailey's Fine Jewelry in Raleigh's Village District is displaying a gingerbread house that is worth $1,278,395. The house was created by Lindsay Deibler, "The Ginger Gingerbread Lady," and will be on display from now until December 8. (WBTW)
- The Raleigh Fire Department has seen its lowest number of applicants in at least three years. The drop in interest began prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year the department only saw 446 applicants, and is focused on producing the most highly qualified candidates as opposed to quantity. (WNCT9)
- Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson shared some of her top priorities during a virtual listening session on Wednesday. She also went over homicide statistics for Raleigh and emphasized that 29 of 30 murders have seen arrests. (WRAL)
- NC TECH has released a new index tracking how competitive NC metropolitan statistical areas compare to 110 regions across the country. Raleigh-Cary ranked 7th based on three sub-indexes: technology talent supply, technology talent demand, and innovation indicators. (TechWire)
- All or portions of over two dozen laws that the NC General Assembly passed this year took effect as of December 1. Some of the laws include protections for pregnant incarcerated women, raising the juvenile prosecution age to 8, and requiring officers to report fellow law enforcement's apparent excessive force to a superior. (WCNC)
