Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The case over sitting Attorney General Josh Stein's 2020 campaign ad is advancing after a grand jury on Monday returned a presentment to the Wake County district attorney's office. The move will allow prosecutors to pursue a possible indictment against Stein and his campaign. The ad in question featured a supporter claiming that opponent Jim O'Neill, "left 1,500 rape kits sitting on a shelf, leaving rapists on the street." O'Neill alleged the ad as defamatory, as local law enforcement agencies typically maintain control of rape kits. The 90-year-old law carries a fine of up to $1,000 and up to 60 days in jail. (WRAL)
  2. Residents of Raleigh's Mordecai community are fighting back against a proposed rezoning in the neighborhood. The owner of "The Mordecai on Clover" is trying to get the five-acre property rezoned to allow businesses and apartments to be built up to five stories. The mixed-use complex could be home to 300 new apartment units and retail space. Neighbors point out that the stretch of Wake Forest Road near their home was recently reduced from four lanes to two in order to make the area safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, and the development would increase traffic in the area. (CBS17)
  3. The Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern North Carolina is warning concertgoers that scammers are using Ticketmaster lookalike sites. The websites collect personal information and consumers may notice receiving suspicious tickets, up-charging, or no receipt of tickets at all. People have reported falling victim to the scam while attempting to attend Raleigh events and more. If attending an event, consumers should carefully inspect website URLs and use a secure payment method. (CBS17)
  4. It has been nearly two weeks since six teens were injured in a shooting at a Raleigh nightclub during a private event, and the Raleigh Police Department are still looking for a suspect. One of the victims is still being treated after a gunshot to the arm pierced his lung. RPD has not charged or cited anyone in connection with the incident. (WRAL) Although the ongoing search for a suspect can be discouraging, on Tuesday, Raleigh Police made an arrest in the August 7 shooting death of Francisco Javier Rojo. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  5. Triangle veterinarians are warning pet owners that they are seeing an outbreak or a respiratory illness in dogs. The illness is serious, and sometimes life threatening, and they have not been able to trace the illness to any one known cause. The symptoms begin mildly, with a little cough or congestion, but some of the dogs have gone from minimal symptoms to really sick in a short period of time. If your dog has a runny nose, congestion, or cough, it is important to get them to the vet and keep them away from other dogs. (CBS17)
