Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson held a news conference following the Saturday afternoon shooting by police officers. The unidentified man was throwing Molotov cocktails and setting cars on fire near the southeast district station on Rock Quarry Road. Multiple officers fired at the man after he would not stop throwing the cocktails and tossed them near officers. Officers attempted life-saving efforts on the man, but he later died at the hospital. - Raleigh's Helping Hand Mission is now collecting supplies to aid those in need ahead of summer. During the summer the Helping Hand Mission gives away fans and they are already receiving a high volume of requests. It is currently collecting fans from 9 a.m. -9 p.m. Monday-Saturday, at its location on Rock Quarry Road. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina Supreme Court announced on Friday that it will not hear the case of Rev. William Barber II's conviction. Barber, a civil rights leader is appealing the trespassing conviction from a 2017 demonstration inside of the Legislative Building. A jury found Barber guilty after leading a call-and-response chant outside of Senate leader Phil Berger's office, and a Court of Appeals panel upheld the conviction in December. (WWAY3)
- It's been more than a decade since 30 tornadoes touched down across North Carolina on April 16, 2011. Homes and businesses near downtown Raleigh suffered significant damage. Many residents still remember the day that took the lives of 24 people and caused tens of millions in property damage, especially on days like Friday with projected tornadoes and heavy storms.
