Happy International Podcast Day!

I have to warn you some of the top news today might be triggering to some. Thankfully there is no harrowing endings, but some might find the events chilling. If you find news regarding endangerment to children too much for you, you might want to skip stories #2 and #3.

First, today's weather:

Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 80 Low: 61.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. COVID-19 is not the only health threat putting strain on medical providers. Opioid overdoses have continued to rise in North Carolina and as addiction recovery centers are reaching capacity, those unable to obtain help are seeking care in emergency rooms. Healing Transition's Women's Campus broke ground on an extension to one of its facilities on Tuesday, but officials say it is the first time in its 20 year history it had to tell people it cannot help them. (WNCT9)
  2. Principal Marla Mondora of Martin Magnet Middle School had to send out a message to parents on Wednesday morning to warn of the dangerous encounter one student faced. An older man in a red pickup truck approached a student who was walking on Ridge Road, and tried to abduct the child. The student was able to escape and make it to the school for assistance. Mondora warns parents to discuss the importance of being alert and how to respond in an incident like this. (WRAL, CBS17)
  3. A Raleigh resident is facing a series of charges after admitting to sexually abusing two young girls last year. Miguel Antonio Cazares was arrested on Tuesday following an investigation prompted by a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children unit. (WAVY) In an unrelated case, Kellie Michelle Smith, a Raleigh woman who aided her husband's production of child pornography has been sentenced to five years in prison for her role. (FOX8)
  4. On Tuesday Night, Raleigh-Durham International airport had to close a parking deck for approximately two hours in response to an attempted carjacking report. The airport says the parking deck was closed after law enforcement with the RDU Airport Authority responded to a call in the parking garage. Passengers were told to remain in the terminals and arrivals were redirected to another nearby parking lot. (WITN)
  5. The pending state budget bill has been wrapped up by the General Assembly and will now make its way to negotiations with Governor Cooper. (USNews) Within the budget proposal, there is one controversial provision that would bar city and county officials in North Carolina from passing local tree ordinances. Opponents say that the measure would result in lost tree canopy and loss of necessary tree shade. Advocates say the measure is not anti-tree but rather a "procedural measure." (E&E News)

The News & Observer put out a quiz to see how up-to-date on the area news you are. I'm happy to say that I got 6/7 right! In my defense one of the questions was not about Raleigh and one was only partially relevant to us. Try your luck and see how well you've been keeping up! If you score less than 5, odds are you stumbled upon this newsletter by accident and should probably click this link to subscribe.
