Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Construction has begun on North Carolina's Freedom Park. The park is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022, and features a design led by the late Durham architect Phil Freelon. The Holt Brothers Construction is leading the project that they say is "one of the most important projects we do." The project members on the Freedom Park Board have been working toward the park for 20 years. (Spectrum News 1)
  2. Small businesses in downtown are excited for sales boosts this weekend, and some businesses are getting added publicity. The Dreamville City Guide Pamphlet features some of Raleigh's minority-owned businesses. One-of-One Boutique is excited to be featured after a January heist, and Black Friday Market is also featured.   3. The owner of a Raleigh restaurant spoke before U.S. senators about the importance of helping establishments that have been devastated by COVID-19 pandemic, supply-chain disruptions, and rising inflation. Cheetie Kumar spoke before the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business on how she feels it is important to replenish the Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF). (WRAL)
  4. One person was shot on Thursday morning near a hotel in east Raleigh. Officers responded to the shooting call around 5:50 am and found a person shot at the U-Haul Moving & Storage store, across the street from the Quality Inn. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and police are still investigating the shooting. (CBS17)
  5. A North Carolina poultry farm has been forced to euthanize around 32,000 turkeys as a preventative measure after a sample of the flock tested positive for high path avian influenza. The turkeys tested positive first at a diagnostic lab in N.C. and then again in a National Veterinary Services Lab in Iowa. According to USDA, the bird flu has been confirmed across several states and is devastating poultry farmers. (USA Today)

  • Last month, a Cary police officer and high school athletic trainer saved a man's life, and on Wednesday they were reunited and awarded. (abc11)
  • Details are coming together for the immersive Van Gogh exhibit coming to Raleigh. The date is not announced, but the event will be held at 6240 Glenwood Avenue. (WRAL)
  • Doug McMcillan, the president and CEO of YMCA of the Triangle has announced he will be retiring this year. (WRAL)
