Happy National Oyster Day,

Today is just another day in Raleigh, and that means that there is so much news for me to talk about! Today you can read about how the Biden and the CDC's announcement affects Wake County, the new chief of police and the DA's plans to combat crime, and some funding that parents of school aged children will want to know about. Check out all that and so much more below.

Today's weather, 8/5: Clear throughout the day. High: 84 Low: 68.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Hours after many people were served eviction notices at the Wake County Courthouse, President Biden, in accordance with the CDC, issued a renewed eviction moratorium. Wake County is considered an area with high transmission, and therefore falls under the federal moratorium. The moratorium prevents people from being evicted for late or nonpayment, and extends until October 3. There is still money and resources for Wake County residents concerned about their housing when the moratorium does end, and with the extension, advocates hope renters will use this time to reach out and apply for help. (abc11)
  2. Raleigh's new chief of police Estella Patterson kicked off her service with an event to celebrate 'National Night Out.' On Tuesday night, the new chief got out in the community to connect with locals, and urged them to get involved. Patterson is quoted saying, "If we're gonna' really attack our violent crime, we're gonna' need the community's help," and she plans to reduce gun violence by building relationships in the community. (CBS17) In another effort to reduce crime in Wake County, the District Attorney has created a special unit to deal with assaults after number of assaults hit a five-year high. (WRAL)
  3. A group of nurses and other healthcare professionals took to Raleigh to advocate against the COVID-19 vaccine mandate that Atrium Health and Novant Health have given. The companies mandated that their workers must be vaccinated by the end of October and September 15 respectively. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has said that companies can require employees to be vaccinated, with exceptions for disability or religious belief. (WSOC-TV)
  4. The police have been busy at work, and today there was news of two notable arrests, as well as one major conviction. The first arrest is in relation to the shooting that happened on Tuesday night, investigation is still underway. (WRAL) The second is actually the second arrest made in connection to the murder on Capital Boulevard in July. (CBS17) The last actually happened in Clayton, however it involved a man who sex trafficked young victims in the area. He has received three consecutive life sentences for the crimes that took place between November 2014 and October 2015. (CBS17)
  5. Parents can expect more news coming soon regarding the funding of school construction in Wake County. Swift Creek Elementary and Baucom Elementary will be renovated, and more schools are slated to be built to meet demands of the growing community. (WRAL) For parents of children receiving free or reduced-price meals at school, the NC Department of Health and Human Services will be distributing $413 million in food assistance payments to eligible children across the state. The payment will come in the way of a one-time $375 deposit on their family's Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) card. (CBS17)
