Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Wake County EMS will be getting a new program to help "route calls to the right care, at the right time, at the right place." The Nurse Navigation Program will have 911 dispatchers rout low acuity calls to a nurse, and the nurse can give advice over the phone, direct the patient to urgent care, or decide if they need to send an ambulance. This program will hopefully save more ambulances for emergency situations and free up emergency room space. (CBS17)
- The Millbrook High senior night basketball game had to be cancelled after a disturbing post on social media. The post depicted several Black players from the Knightdale High School basketball team in the target of a sniper's cross hairs, and one player hanging from a noose. Friday was supposed to be the last regular season game for the Knightdale team, but the schools immediately cancelled the game after parents and administrators saw the image. (WRAL)
- Parents in Wake and Johnston counties are taking legal action against the mask requirements in public schools. Parents in both districts have filed claims against the school board's liability insurance policies, saying that mandates in the classroom violate the Constitution and their oath of office. Wake County has seen six claims, and will meet again to discuss masks in March. (CBS17) Wake County parents and educators with the Carolina Teachers Alliance held a rally outside the school board meeting to urge them to drop the mask requirements. (WRAL)
- A 7-year-old child was injured in a multi-car crash in Raleigh on Monday. Police say that a man was driving on New Bern Avenue and he ran a stoplight and T-boned another vehicle. The man fled the scene, but was captured by police shortly after. The vehicle was reported as stolen earlier on Monday, and five cars in total were involved in the crash, with three of them severely damaged. (WRAL)
- Wake Tech has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant of nearly $1.4 million to enhance undergraduate research opportunities for STEM students. The funds will strengthen the college's STEM Academic Research & Training (START) program over the next five years and increase access to STEM education for underrepresented populations.
